Sabbiona Holstein: using data-driven heat detection to maximise genetic progress and improve reproductive performance.

Thanks to Tru-Test Active Tag, Sabbiona Holstein improved heat detection accuracy, reduced the number of inseminations required per pregnancy, and gained greater confidence in the use of sexed semen.

Main Goal

Maximise the genetic potential of high-value heifers

At Sabbiona Holstein, genetics is at the heart of every management decision. With a herd of approximately 1,400 animals and 650 cows in milk, the farm has built an international reputation for breeding high-value Holstein genetics and continuously improving reproductive performance.

For Sabbiona, heifers represent the future of the herd. They carry the farm’s most advanced genetics and play a critical role in the long-term breeding strategy. As the operation continued to grow, relying solely on visual observation was no longer enough to accurately identify heats and make timely breeding decisions.

“We no longer wanted to rely on guesswork. We wanted to be sure that an animal was in heat and inseminate her at exactly the right time.“

To improve heat detection accuracy, Sabbiona introduced Datamars Livestock’s Active Tag system, using collars on breeding-age heifers. In addition to monitoring activity, health and rumination, the system provides reliable heat detection data that helps the team make more informed reproductive decisions.

“The solution has fully met our expectations. From the very beginning, we saw how it could help us manage our heifers more effectively.“

Since implementing Active Tag, the farm has improved reproductive efficiency and increased confidence in the use of sexed semen. The average number of inseminations required per pregnancy has fallen from approximately 1.6 – 1.7 to 1.3 – 1.4, helping the farm maximise the genetic potential of its animals.

“Today, we can make greater use of sexed semen because we know with confidence when an animal is in heat.“

Beyond reproduction, real-time notifications on activity and health have simplified day-to-day management and given the team greater peace of mind.

“If an animal isn’t doing well, you receive a notification through the app. That gives you much greater peace of mind.“

For Sabbiona Holstein, reliable data has become an essential part of maintaining high genetic standards and supporting future growth.
