Main Goal

Improve heat detection, gain better health insights, and support more confident daily herd management

At Bloemen Farm in the Netherlands, herd management is built around precision, consistency, and gradual optimisation.

The family-run dairy farm manages 85 dairy cows and 10 dry cows, producing an average of 11.700 kg of milk per cow while balancing farm activities with work outside the business.

As the herd gradually expanded, heat detection – especially in heifers – became increasingly difficult to manage consistently. Missing heats or inseminating at the wrong time directly affected reproductive performance and daily efficiency.

“We noticed that heats in the heifers were not always being recognised in time.”

To improve monitoring and gain more reliable insights into animal behaviour, Bloemen introduced Tru-Test Active Tag with collars across the herd.

The system quickly became part of the farm’s daily routine, providing real-time alerts for heat detection, health issues, and calving events directly through the app.

“Having insight into behaviour means making the right decision at the right time.”

Today, the team checks alerts before milking and can immediately separate cows requiring attention. Continuous monitoring throughout the day allows faster interventions and helps prevent issues from escalating.

The system also provides valuable reproductive and health reports, helping identify irregular cycles, monitor recovery after illness, and improve insemination timing with greater accuracy.

“We can now determine the right insemination moment more accurately based on the indications in the app.”

Beyond reproductive improvements, the farm has also reduced hormone use, improved treatment decisions, and gained greater peace of mind through remote monitoring — particularly valuable when family members are not physically present on the farm.

Behaviour data and health indexes now support more confident and data-driven decisions across daily herd management.

“Even when I’m away, I know that cows in heat or with health issues will be reported.”

Looking ahead, Bloemen plans to continue optimizing herd management while improving milk production and longevity, with Datamars Livestock technology remaining a key part of that strategy.
