Main Goal

Improve animal welfare, optimize herd spaces, and simplify daily management

At Bertoletti Farm in northern Italy, herd management has always focused on balancing productivity, organization, and animal welfare.

The family-run dairy farm manages around 1.000 Holstein cattle, including 450 cows in milk, with a production system closely linked to the Grana Padano PDO supply chain.

As the farm expanded, managing replacement heifers and dry cows became increasingly challenging. Indoor spaces alone made it more difficult to guarantee adequate movement and comfort during some of the most delicate production phases.

To address this, the Bertoletti family developed a new dedicated structure for replacement heifers, designed to support animals throughout different stages of growth while maintaining efficient daily management.

“The outdoor paddocks, built with permanent electric fencing, were created to improve animal welfare.”

The new barn was divided into five pens, from weaned calves to pregnant heifers, with outdoor paddocks connected to each group. As animals grow, the available space increases progressively, improving movement while maintaining control and organization.

To manage the outdoor areas, the farm introduced permanent electric fencing powered by the Speedrite Unigizer 6000i energizer, chosen for its reliability, durability, and ease of use.

The system allowed the team to create secure outdoor spaces that were simple to monitor and manage on a daily basis.

“Each pen has its own fence, and the space increases as the animals grow.”

The impact was visible quickly. Greater freedom of movement contributed to more balanced heifer growth and earlier first insemination, while daily herd management became more immediate and organized.

The same approach was later extended to dry cows, helping improve movement during a particularly delicate phase while reducing calving-related issues and supporting a faster return to lactation.

“First of all, managing the herd and keeping it under control is much more convenient.”

Beyond operational improvements, the farm has also started seeing positive economic results linked to improved reproductive efficiency and reduced replacement times.

Today, Bertoletti Farm continues investing in solutions designed to improve organization, animal welfare, and long-term herd sustainability.

“I recommend these solutions to everyone, especially for animal welfare.”
